Final-call to Replace First Generation On-Loan Octopus to Ensure Valid “Dood”

On 17 October, Octopus Cards Limited (OCL) has rolled out the final phase of the First Generation On-Loan Octopus replacement. From then onwards, the First Generation On-Loan Octopus will gradually go invalid three months after the notification sound “dood-dood-dood” goes into effect. Holders of such Octopus are encouraged to replace their cards to ensure a smooth usage. Users can check whether their cards require replacement at the Octopus website.
Additional Payment Option for All Smartphone Users Via QR Code

Octopus App for Business aims to provide merchants an easy, cost efficient and secure mobile payment acceptance alternative via QR code. From now on, Android and iOS users are able to download the app for free via Google Play Store or App Store. This initiative represents OCL’s commitment to cater for merchants of all sizes with innovative and cost-effective measures, and to overcome the technical challenges with least resources.
As an effort to promote cashless payment, from now until end March 2018, eligible merchants who download and apply for a Business O! ePay account to start receiving QR code payment, would be entitled to a 12-month free administrative fee period. Visit here for more details.

OCL and Samsung jointly launched the long awaited Smart Octopus in Samsung Pay on 11 December, bringing an all-in-one mobile payment wallet to market. The unrivalled convenience will spur progress for Hong Kong towards a cashless smart city. This partnership represented a significant milestone for Octopus as well as in the payment industry in Hong Kong. Combining NFC offline payment with smartphone, offering users in Hong Kong a speedy, convenient, secure and hassle-free payment option with wide acceptance.
Available in the market from 14 December onwards, the Smart Octopus in Samsung Pay will become an alternative for users to enjoy their everyday life spending with just one smartphone device – covering more than 21,000 retail touch points, as well as for transport and access controls. Exchanging Ideas with Industry Leaders
Our CEO Mr Sunny Cheung was invited to share his management philosophy at the Management as Liberal Art Symposium organised by Peter F Drucker Academy and Centennial College on 21 September, with a full-house of audience. At this industry exchange platform, Mr Cheung shared his leadership motto in staying along with the social change.
Promoting Anti-Money Laundering across Public and Private Sectors
As a responsible corporate citizen, we are obligated to support anti-money laundering activities to protect our stakeholders’ interests in collaboration with the public and private sectors. OCL was invited to speak at JFIU Narcotics Bureau’s Annual Financial Investigation Course (International Class) on 10 October, to share an introductory overview of financial investigation with 50 attendees from local and international regulatory and law enforcement agencies.
Fostering FinTech Development
On 25 October, OCL participated in the second Hong Kong Monetary Authority FinTech Day at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, showcasing Octopus App and Octopus QR Code payment capabilities to the participants in the event. Our Technical Director Mr Sammy Kam was a panel speaker at the event’s industry exchange forum themed “Future Payment Technology”.
