Octopus Named Google Play’s “Best Everyday Essential” in Hong Kong for 2025

(Hong Kong, November 19, 2025) — Octopus Cards Limited (Octopus) announced that the Octopus App has been named “Best Everyday Essential” in Hong Kong on Google Play, in recognition of its contribution to making everyday life more convenient and efficient for Hong Kong people. Comprehensive Services for Everyday Life

Hong Kong users value apps that enhance quality of life and efficiency, and the Octopus App is a prime example of practicality and innovation combined. The Octopus App allows Android users to use Mobile Octopus easily across all smartphone brands and top up via credit card, bank, or Octopus Wallet, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted payment experience. It also enables users to manage transaction records, pay bills online, receive transport subsidies, and redeem loyalty rewards. Users can also settle government and telecom bills, purchase event tickets, or make charitable donations, all with a simple tap.

Supporting Every Customer Segment for a Personalised Experience
From local journeys to overseas travel, meeting every mobility need

To meet the needs of different customer segments, the Octopus App supports applications for the JoyYou Card and the Student Travel Scheme. Users can easily complete their applications by following simple in-app instructions. In response to the growing demand for personalisation, the Octopus App features a Card Image Store where users can choose from a range of designs featuring Japanese anime characters, local artwork, or brand collaborations to express their individual styles. To cater for evolving travel needs, a dedicated “Travel Corner” has also been launched. Its payment network now covers major destinations including the Chinese Mainland, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and more, allowing users to enjoy seamless Octopus payments for transport and retail.

With millions of users now on the Octopus App, security is our top priority. The Octopus App incorporates Google Play Integrity API to verify that the app is running on trusted devices and to prevent risks such as fraud, bots, and data theft. This technology enables Octopus to conduct daily risk checks and successfully detect and block tens thousands of potential fraudulent activities over the past year, providing users with enhanced protection for their Mobile Octopus and Octopus Wallet.
