Electronic payment in taxis surged 70% during Easter holiday Mobile Octopus gained popularity among visitors
HONG KONG, April 24, 2025 — Electronic taxi payments through Octopus Mobile POS jumped 70% in transaction value and 69% in transaction volume during the Easter holiday period compared to last year.¹ Tourist Mobile Octopus usage surged 62% year-on-year, with transaction values rising over 50% in the same period.
Currently, 30,000 taxi drivers accept payments through Octopus Mobile POS (mPOS). Passengers can tap to pay with Octopus or scan to pay with major digital wallets, creating an all-in-one payment solution. Drivers receive free Octopus mPOS devices and pay no handling fees when transferring fares to their Octopus cards.
Jaslin Goh, Marketing, Communications and Data Director at Octopus: "Since opening our taxi payment network to other platforms, we've seen remarkable growth in Octopus usage for taxi payments. With the Labour Day Golden Week approaching, Octopus will partner with merchants to offer more promotions and support Hong Kong's economic development."
Since launching the Octopus App for Business in 2018, Octopus has waived handling or bank account transfer fees for taxi drivers to drive more adoption of e-payments and digitalisation of taxi services. Registered drivers receive a free Octopus mPOS, eliminating set-up cost entirely. Drivers can transfer fares to their Octopus cards at no cost, maintaining zero-cost payment convenience.
Currently Octopus accepts QR payments in taxis from UnionPay, AlipayHK, Alipay, WeChat Pay and PayMe by HSBC.
