Cumulative Transaction Volume Reaches $30 million
Octopus Now Launches the Octopus – China T-Union Cards (Sold version) to Enhance Payment Solutions for Hong Kong Travellers to Mainland China
(Hong Kong, 24 September 2024) Octopus Cards Limited (Octopus) announces the launch of the Octopus - China T-Union Cards, following a successful pilot programme in March. With the card, travelers to the Mainland can take public transportation in more than 336 cities and 1,759 counties nationwide.
Nationwide Acceptance: In High Demand Since Pilot Programme in March
The pilot programme for the Octopus – China T-Union Card has gained significant popularity since its launch in March this year. As of August, the transaction volume has reached nearly $30 million. The card is widely accepted nationwide in cities including Harbin, Ningbo, Sanya and Xinjiang, with frequent usage in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Beijing, Shanghai, and Hangzhou.
Starting from today, the Octopus - China T-Union Cards are available at all Circle K and 7-Eleven stores, designated MTR Customer Service Centres at seven MTR stations#, and the Octopus Online Shop, priced at $68 each.
Tim Ying, CEO of Octopus said: "Since the pilot launch of the Octopus – China T-Union Card in March, we have received overwhelmingly feedback from customers, with transaction volumes reaching nearly $30 million. To make it easier for customers to get around in the Mainland, we are rolling out more Octopus – China T-Union cards. With seamless top-up in Hong Kong dollars and just a tap, Octopus customers can enjoy a smooth and convenient cross-boundary travel experience."
The Octopus - China T-Union Card requires no deposit and can store up to $3,000 in value. Customers can pay for transport fares in Mainland China with the China T-Union logo, excluding retail payments. Cardholders can top up their cards in Hong Kong dollars, with fares deducted in RMB based on the current foreign exchange rate. In Hong Kong, the card functions the same way as an Octopus card, accepted at nearly 190,000 Octopus acceptance points for transportation, shopping, dining and more.
The exchange rate for the card is valid for 365 days and will be automatically updated whenever customers top up or check their card balance. Customers can also download the Octopus App to check the remaining value and transaction history of the Octopus – China T-Union Card, and past and current exchange rates anytime through the Octopus App.
