Apple Pay with Octopus is the New Definition of Mobile Payment
In June, Octopus Cards Limited (OCL) announced the launch of Octopus on iPhone and Apple Watch, enabling customers with these devices to enjoy easy and convenient contactless payments at all Octopus acceptance points. With Express Mode for Apple Pay, customers only need to tap their iPhone or Apple Watch to take public transportation – and they’re good to go. They can also use Apple Pay with Octopus to pay at 35,000 retail outlets like supermarkets and convenience stores. There's no need to authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID, no extra taps, and no extra steps. Transaction and balance details are instantly displayed on the iPhone or Apple Watch.

Octopus Assists University of Hong Kong with COVID-19 Research
In March, The LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) and Octopus Cards Limited (OCL) jointly announced that due to the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic, OCL had, on the request by HKUMed, agreed to provide aggregate statistical data relating to the usage of Octopus cards for the purpose of supporting HKUMed to conduct research projects to contain the continuous spread of COVID-19 in Hong Kong.

On-Loan Octopus Replacement Programme Continues in Phases
In June, Octopus Cards Limited (OCL) announced that the First Generation On-Loan Octopus Replacement Programme has been successfully completed. It will now begin replacing those On-Loan Octopus issued from 2002 onwards in phases.
To continue to provide customers with reliable, fast and secure payment service, OCL is replacing On-Loan Octopus issued from 2002 onwards in phases for free. Starting 17 June, each batch of Octopus which need to be replaced will be assigned a notification period of at least three months. A special reader prompt of “Dood~ Dood Dood” will be introduced as the notification begins to remind customers that they should replace their Octopus.

Replacement of Anonymous On-Loan Adult Octopus with Elder Octopus at OSPs
Customers who have reached the age of 65 can now instantly replace their Anonymous On-Loan Adult Octopus with an Elder Octopus at any Octopus Service Point (OSP) for free. This new service facilitates a seamless, easy transfer of most of the services and benefits of the old card to the new one; so customers can also conveniently enjoy concessionary fares through the Government Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme.
Previously, customers wishing to replace their Anonymous On-Loan Adult Octopus with an Elder Octopus must visit an MTR Customer Service Centre to return the Adult Octopus, obtain the refund for the deposit and remaining value, and then purchase a new Anonymous On-Loan Elder Octopus with cash. Most of the services and benefits of the Anonymous On-Loan Adult Octopus, such as Automatic Add Value Service, Octopus Reward$ and access control for residential buildings, had to be re-registered as well, which takes time.

Safer Distancing When Paying with Octopus!
With just one tap at an Octopus Reader, customers can pay in a more hygienic way for commuting, shopping, dining, parking and crossing tunnels. Customers are also reminded to wash hands frequently, and wipe the Octopus with alcohol sanitiser to maintain good hygiene!

Card Face Design Competition
Co-organised by Octopus Cards Limited and St. James’ Settlement, the Octopus Talent Nurturing (OTN) Programme hold the Octopus Card Face Design Competition every year to unleash students’ creativity through designing an Octopus. The winning masterpiece will be printed on an Octopus, with HK$100 stored value, to be distributed to participating students.
This year, the design theme is “Smart City”, and the winner is Katrina Wan of Buddhist Chi King Primary School. She believes the Octopus card can be incorporated into smart phones, and then human can control a robot to use the smart phone for shopping and settling payments remotely.
