OKApplying for / Upgrading an Octopus Wallet & Identity Verification
To apply for Wallet Lite, you have to be age 12 or above; simply download the Octopus App, and register by submitting only the mobile number and email address, you can have your Wallet Lite set-up and ready for use instantly.
You have to be 18 years of age or above and a HKID cardholder. In the Octopus App, under "Wallet" section, please tap "Balance” and follow the instructions to upgrade your Wallet instantly.
As part of the upgrade process, you need to provide a photo of your HKID via Octopus App, take a selfie for identity verification and provide your residential address. All personal data is protected by encryption and used solely for application processing, account operation and customer service.
If you are using Wallet Plus, you still need to provide the HKID photo again which is of the same information as in our record.
To safeguard customer's interest, we collect the required information for identity verification.
To comply with the latest regulatory requirements, from 21 July 2022 onwards, users without identity verification (Octopus Wallet Lite users) are NOT able to enjoy the following services:
- P2P payment/request with other Wallet Lite users
- Cash top-up to your Wallet through designated merchants
- Octopus Cards payments with designated cross border merchants using the Octopus Online Payment Service
- Linking eligible Octopus Cards to make payments with designated cross border merchants using the Octopus Online Payment Service
- Linking eligible Octopus Cards to top up your Wallet (you can still register any cards linked under Wallet Plus and Pro (Verified) for this)
Management of Octopus Cards via Octopus App, and the collection of Government's public transport fare subsidy and consumption vouchers would not be affected.
Until 31 December 2022, you have an option to transfer funds to your Wallet at least once from a bank account under your name through one of the following channels, and your Wallet will become Plus automatically within 48 hours after the successful transfer:
- via designated bank app in the Octopus App
- through Faster Payment System from your banking app / e-banking platform
If you would like to upgrade your Wallet to Wallet Pro (Verified) for higher transaction limits, you must provide a photo of your HKID via Octopus App, take a selfie for identity verification and provide your residential address. The HKID information needs to be the same as in our record.
Until 31 December 2022, you have an option to transfer funds to your Wallet at least once from a bank account under your name to become a Wallet Plus user.
Yes, even not completed the identity verification you can still use Octopus Card to collect Government's public transport fare subsidy and consumption vouchers via Octopus App.
You may register for and hold only ONE Octopus Wallet at one time.
- You already have an Octopus Wallet;
- You used to have an Octopus Wallet and have cancelled it within the last 3 months;
- You are under the age of 12.
