OKAbout Octopus on Android (Personalised Mobile Octopus with Student Status)
Octopus on Android is an Octopus in Octopus App that can be added to Google Wallet* on an Android device that uses Near Field Communication (NFC) to make contactless mobile payments for transport, shopping, and dining in Hong Kong – by just tapping your Android device at Octopus readers. It can also be used to make online payments.
Note: If you cannot find details related to Octopus in Google Wallet, please go to the Octopus App. Aside from the “Find My Device”* feature in Google Wallet, all Octopus functions can be accessed through the Octopus App.
* Google Wallet and “Google Find My Device” are only available on devices that support Google Play Services.
Please click here to see the list including but not limited to the mobile device models that support Octopus on Android. Octopus on Android is compatible only with mobile devices running Android 12 or above, or EMUI 13 or above, sold by authorised retailers in Hong Kong.
To locate the NFC antenna, please refer to the manufacturers' instructions at their website.
To transfer your Personalised Octopus with Student Status to Octopus on Android, you need to meet the following:
- Holding an eligible physical Personalised Octopus with Student Status; and
- Aged between 13 to 25
If your MTR Student Travel Scheme has expired, you need to apply for renewal of your Student Status via MTR to continue to enjoy the MTR concessionary fares.
Please note that if you have submitted an application for MTR Student Travel Scheme with your physical Personalised Octopus, please do not proceed with card transfer. You can activate or renew the Student Status with your physical Octopus card, and then transfer it to Mobile Octopus.
Note: Access control systems in some buildings may not have been updated to support Octopus on Android. Please keep your physical Octopus for access control. Please check the list of updated access control system that support Octopus on Android here.
If you have provisioned an Octopus on Android (Anonymous) before, please delete and refund it before provisioning Octopus on Android (Personalised Mobile Octopus with Student Status).
If you own a compatible Android device, you may choose Personalised Mobile Octopus with Student Status when you submit your online application via Octopus App or MTR Website. After receiving the email of successful application, you may directly add Octopus on Android (Personalised Mobile Octopus with Student Status).
Please ensure you have met the following conditions when applying for the Personalised Mobile Octopus with Student Status:
- Aged between 13 to 25 years old
- Currently enrolled as a full-time student studying in a recognised institution in Hong Kong

To use Octopus on Android, please update your mobile device to Android 12 or above, or EMUI 13 or above, and ensure your device has not been rooted before. The latest version of Octopus App, internet connection, and an NFC-enabled handset are all required.
You can use Octopus on Android just like a regular Octopus with the added benefit of being able to top up on the go using your credit or debit cards in Google Pay*.
* Google Pay is only available on devices that support Google Play Services.
The stored value limit of Octopus on Android is HK$3,000.
Your Octopus on Android will become an Inactive Mobile Octopus and an Inactive Mobile Octopus Administrative Fee will be deducted from the remaining value and deposit after 3 years of inactivity, and annually thereafter if it remains to be unused for any transaction. Octopus on Android does NOT support Wear OS or any other Android smart watches at this moment.
If your physical Personalised Octopus, which has been transferred to Mobile Octopus, has a photo printed on it, it indicates that we have a corresponding photo on file for your Personalised Mobile Octopus.
