United Arab Emirates - Dubai

Octopus in the Gulf

Octopus is bringing convenience to transport operators and passengers in Dubai through a new e-ticketing system.

Making everyday life easier in Dubai

In 2007, Octopus was commissioned to develop and implement the core back-office for a multi-purpose contactless smart card system in Dubai. The system is a common payment platform for public transport services in the country, including the new Metro, public buses, waterbuses and parking.

Octopus provides the Octopus Clearing House system and a loyalty system to the scheme operator, in addition to sharing its world-renowned expertise in the operation of public transport e-ticketing systems.

The electronic pay-as-you-go fare system, implemented in phases, was rolled out on 9 September 2009 (the same day as the official launch of the new Dubai Metro). New payment cards, known as the Nol cards, will eventually be used on all integrated transit modes.

Once fully implemented, the Nol cards will offer various features, including a loyalty programme and an auto-reload capability. Over two million transactions are expected to be processed through the transport e-ticketing system every day.

The Dubai project has added a new dimension to our overseas business. It underscores our aspirations to make everyday life easier for both operators and customers all over the world.

“On behalf of the Unified Automatic Fare Collection (UAFC) Department, I would like to thank you for your partnership in implementing the UAFC “NOL” system during 2007-2009. Your efforts made all the difference in helping our community successfully launch this system on 09-09- 2009.”
