Octopus for the Dutch
Octopus has made everyday life easier in the Netherlands by developing an e-ticketing system for public transport.
In 2003, Octopus was commissioned to develop and implement the core back-office for a multi-purpose contactless smart card system for the public transport system in the Netherlands.
The smart card, which is known as the "OV-chipkaart", is used for travel on buses, trams and trains nationwide. Octopus provided the Octopus Clearing House system in addition to sharing its world-renowned expertise in the operation of public transport e-ticketing systems.
The OV-chipkaart was launched in Rotterdam in June 2007, and was extended to Amsterdam in 2009. More than two million passengers benefit from the convenience of this e-ticketing system every day. The system will be progressively expanded to cover the entire nation by 2011.

“The Octopus System has been the first part of our nationwide system in the Netherlands that really worked! Today, we are successfully serving metro, tram, bus and long-distance rail transport with more than 5 million cards in the market.”
