The Netherlands

Octopus for the Dutch

Octopus has made everyday life easier in the Netherlands by developing an e-ticketing system for public transport.

Making everyday life easier in the Netherlands

In 2003, Octopus was commissioned to develop and implement the core back-office for a multi-purpose contactless smart card system for the public transport system in the Netherlands.

The smart card, which is known as the "OV-chipkaart", is the national e-Ticketing scheme used for travel on metros, buses, trams and trains nationwide. Octopus provides the Octopus Clearing House system in addition to sharing its world-renowned expertise in the operation of public transport e-ticketing systems.

Launched in Rotterdam in 2005, the OV-chipkaart was extended to Amsterdam in 2006, and progressively expanded to cover the entire nation since 2011. The national e-Ticketing scheme provides for transport revenue collection on all major national and regional rail, bus, metro and tram systems and currently handles over 2 billion transactions per year. It has a card-base of over 12 million OV-chipkaart holders.

"The Octopus System has been the first part of our nationwide system in the Netherlands that really worked! Today, we are successfully serving metro, tram, bus and long-distance rail transport with more than 12 million cards in the market and over 2 billion transactions per year. As a strategic partner, Octopus not only supports the day-to-day operations of our company but is also a solid partner in development projects regarding future enhancements and expansions of the OV-chipkaart such as the use outside public transport."
