Octopus in New Zealand

Octopus is helping to build a world-class transport ticketing system in Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city.

Making everyday life easier in Auckland

In 2009, Octopus was commissioned to supply the core central clearing house system for a new integrated ticketing system in Auckland, New Zealand. The new ticketing system will be Auckland's, and New Zealand's, first true multi-modal ticket for public transport including train, bus and ferry.

The new integrated ticketing system is an initiative of the Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) delivered in conjunction with its partner Thales, a global technology leader for the transportation markets, and its funders the New Zealand Transport Agency and the Auckland Regional Council. Thales is the prime contractor for this project.

Octopus, as a strategic partner of Thales, will supply the core central clearing house system in New Zealand for ARTA to process daily transactions from the transport operators, undertake financial reconciliation and securely manage cardholders' records. Base functionality is expected to be in place for the 2011 World Rugby Cup.

"Auckland will receive a proven, mature, multi-modal and multi-operator system leveraging some of the best fare collection systems already in operation in the world including Hong Kong, the Netherlands and Dubai."

Rabin Rabindran
Chairman
Auckland Regional Transport Authority

"Thales is pleased to introduce a world-class integrated fare collection system to Auckland and to team with Octopus again to leverage Thales and Octopus's joint worldwide experience in integrated ticketing systems."

Pierre Maciejowski
Vice President
Thales
