Established in 2005, Octopus Holdings Limited is owned by the major transport operators in Hong Kong, and is the holding company of Octopus Cards Limited, the operator of the world's leading contactless smartcard payment system.
The holding company was incorporated after a restructure which aimed to spin off Octopus' non-payment businesses into new, separate subsidiaries independent of the Octopus payment business that is regulated by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. This creates a better environment for future business development and operational efficiency.
In addition to Octopus Cards Limited, there are four new wholly-owned subsidiaries set up under the holding company:
Octopus Rewards Limited is fully responsible for the development and operation of the rewards programme, Octopus Rewards. With close collaboration with different merchants and high penetration of Octopus cards, Octopus Rewards offers all Hong Kong residents a simple yet beneficial rewards programme that everyone can enjoy. Rewards can be earned regardless of the payment means and redeemed instantly across industries.
Octopus Knowledge Limited - to provide international automatic fare collection consultancy services. It has a subsidiary, Octopus Netherlands Limited, which provides consultancy services for the introduction of a smart card system in the Netherlands.
Octopus Connect Limited - to provide customer relationship management and consumer research services.
Octopus Investments Limited - an investments holding company.
