Nurturing children in need

Dedicated to the all-round development of underprivileged children, the Octopus Kids Nurturing Programme subsidised 140 children to participate in various extra-curricular activities this year. And 35 aspiring students with outstanding performance were awarded the opportunity to join the Octopus Kids Fun & Learn Day on December 12.
The event was hosted at the Noah's Ark. Under the guidance of Octopus volunteers, participating students accomplished multiple orienteering missions through teamwork and interaction. The activity imbued the real concept of wealth management in which money alone does not make a rich life. It also takes a great deal of interpersonal relationships, knowledge, time, health and more. Through the activity, students experienced how efforts are rewarded and learned about how to care for each other as well as how to build team spirit.
Each student was also given an Octopus with a stored value of HK$100 to shop at a supermarket. The activity taught students the principle of spending wisely by distinguishing the difference between 'needs' and 'wants'. While some students spent their money on everyday items, some took the opportunity to buy Christmas presents for their families to express their love.
"I was very impressed by this unique learning model for the students," one of the participating teachers said after the event. "Students got a better idea of the real meaning of life and wealth through activities, which also motivated them to think twice before spending. It's difficult to provide similar play-and-learn experience in the regular school curriculum. Besides, some students' families may not be able to afford the admission fee for the theme park."
