A survey conducted by St. James' Settlement shows that over half the children from underprivileged families are denied access to extracurricular activities due to financial difficulties. This will significantly reduce their competitiveness and will create persistent poverty across generations. In view of this, Octopus Cards Limited has teamed up with St. James' Settlement for the third consecutive year to co-organise the Octopus Kids' Nurturing Programme. The programme helps underprivileged students break the mould by providing extracurricular activities for them. Through participation at the kick-off ceremony, recognition activities and graduation performances, the students will be offered an array of life-enriching opportunities to expand their horizons.
The kick-off ceremony was held on 26 September 2009. Guided by a dedicated volunteer team of Octopus staff, 130 students from seven different schools pledged to do their best in the programme and cherish the learning opportunities. Participants have the chance to join extracurricular activities across art and culture including orchestra, Chinese Kung-fu, dancing, ceramics, African drums and lion dancing.
Mr Moses Hui, a wealth management expert, was also invited to deliver an interactive talk on proper spending habits which differentiate 'needs' and 'wants'. Each participant received an Octopus with a stored value of HK$100 and was encouraged to manage wise spending.
With matching support from the Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged of the Social Welfare Department, the programme will continue to extend its reach to the underprivileged community so that more students can pursue their goals.
