Corporate Profile

Tapping Mainland China’s Potential

It has always been a core strategy of Octopus to tap into the enormous China market. With further economic integration between the mainland and Hong Kong, Octopus focuses on sharing our successful experience and expertise with the mainland, while stepping up to bring the added convenience of contactless payment to cross-border travellers.

Application solutions and operational expertise

In January 2010, Octopus China Investments and Digital China Software formed a joint venture to develop application solutions and operational services for Citizen Cards issued in mainland China cities. The Joint Venture marks a remarkable step in Octopus’ journey to implement a long-term growth strategy.

The Joint Venture uniquely combines Octopus’ solid operational experience of contactless smart cards and Digital China’s expertise in IT solutions and nationwide network on the mainland. It is set to develop new application systems for Citizen Cards, provide day-to-day operational services and support, and explore value-added application solutions and services to support the development of the Digital City strategy in mainland China.

Payment service for cross-border travellers

To bring convenience to frequent travelers between mainland China and Hong Kong, and to extend our reach to support our merchants’ expansion plans in the mainland, Octopus made its debut in Shenzhen in 2006. Today, Octopus is accepted at more than 10 outlets operated by Café de Coral and Fairwood in Shenzhen, as well as four outlets of the Shenzhen Dutyfree Group outlets at Huanggang Port and Luo Hu Port.

In 2010, Octopus teamed up with Bank of China to introduce Automatic Add Value Service to mainland China customers, helping them to enjoy a hassle-free experience when shopping, dining and commuting in Hong Kong with Octopus.
